Sporty Mites – Multi Sports for pre-schoolers

Sporty Mites launched in 2012 and runs multi-sports sessions for 2 1/2- 7 year old’s in Bedford. Sporty Mites was developed by Katherine Winger. She formerly worked as a doctor and after having 3 children of her own, felt there was a lack of provision of quality sports based activities for children during their early years. Currently, Sporty Mites provides an after-school programme for the Reception and Key Stage 1 age-group. In addition, this week at Bedford Athletics stadium, Sporty Mites held taster sessions for pre-schoolers which proved hugely popular with 2 over-subscribed sessions and superb feedback on the sporty content delivered by the Sporty Mites team. These sessions will now form part of the Sporty Mites programme going forward.

Sporty Mites deliver multi-sport sessions which includes junior forms of hockey, football and badminton as well as focusing on developing key skills in physical literacy – agility, balance and co-ordination, with a focus on enjoyment and fun!! The children get to enjoy throwing, kicking, and hitting techniques in every session.

“Sporty Mites is about giving children an opportunity to learn new skills, have great fun in a group-based environment and giving them the skills and confidence to continue sports in schools and clubs. This can all contribute to a healthy and happy future. The Crazy Catch is a fantastic tool for the sessions. There is a huge array of activities it can be used for and the kids are drawn to it!” says Katherine Winger.

The Crazy Catch is a key part of the Sporty Mites offering and it is great fun for warm up games, developing hand eye co-ordination and new games made up by the children themselves who love the unpredictable nature of the Ultimate Rebound Net. Indeed this great picture was drawn by 5 year old Oliver showing him playing with the Crazy Catch at Sporty Mites 🙂
